Administration officials confirmed the start of government employee layoffs on Friday, following through on prior threats linked to the continuing US government shutdown, which is set to extend into its third straight week.

Official Announcement and Initial Details

Russell Vought posted on a public platform that “RIFs have begun,” indicating the government’s procedure for letting employees go.

Although Vought did not specify which departments were impacted, a treasury spokesperson confirmed that notices had been issued within that department. Furthermore, a Department of Homeland Security spokesperson indicated that staff reductions would also occur at the CISA. Also, a union for federal workers announced that employees at the Education Department would be impacted by the staff cuts.

Union Response and Legal Challenges

Labor representatives cautions that the layoffs would have “devastating effects” on services used by millions of Americans and vowed to challenge the moves in the legal system.

“It is disgraceful that the administration has used the government shutdown as an excuse to illegally fire numerous employees who deliver critical services to communities across the country,” said Everett Kelley, who leads the AFGE.

The largest labor federation in the US reacted to the announcement, saying, “America’s unions will see you in court.”

Political Standoff and Budget Dispute

Lawmakers from the Democratic party have declined to vote for a Republican-backed legislation to restore funding unless it contains healthcare-centered concessions. Following multiple unsuccessful votes, the GOP leadership in the Senate have adjourned the Senate until next Tuesday, meaning the standoff is not expected to be ended soon.

At a press conference, the GOP leader in the House, Mike Johnson, criticized opposition lawmakers for rejecting the Republican proposal, which was approved in the House on a near party-line vote.

Legal and Operational Constraints

An analysis contended that a government shutdown limits the ability of the administration to conduct terminations, citing guidance that acknowledged any long-term staff cuts need to have been started before the funding expired.

Consequences for Employees

These terminations took place on the very day that government employees received only a partial paycheck for the final days of September but not the beginning of the current month, since appropriations lapsed at the beginning of the month.

A public service advocate, the head of the non-profit Partnership for Public Service, criticized the gridlock’s effect on government workers.

This is unjust to make government staff suffer because our elected officials in Congress and the administration have not succeeded to keep our government running,” Stier stated. “Our flight regulators, VA nurses, smoke jumpers and safety officials are not responsible for this funding crisis.”

The irony is that members of Congress and top administration officials are continuing to be paid amid the funding gap.
